HEALTHY MEAL RELIEF

FREE STUDENT MEAL PROGRAM

Free Student Meal Program. When the school closures occurred, the Y immediately mobilized to provide healthy free lunches to Racine students who lost access to their schools’ free and reduced lunch programs. With tremendous support from the Racine community, who provided financial support and gifts of healthy foods and snacks, the Y provided nearly 16,000 free, nutritious lunches to school-age children between March and July 2020.

HEALTHY LIVING KITCHEN

MEALS FOR FAMILIES, ADULTS AND SENIORS. Childhood obesity and food insecurity are serious challenges in low-income populations, disproportionately impacting the African American community. Over the past decades, sharp increases in overweight and obesity rates have occurred among African American and other ethnic groups, nationally and in Racine.

To address the issue of poor nutrition among low income youth in Racine’s inner city, the Racine Family YMCA has constructed a Healthy Living Kitchen to provide hot, nutritious daily meals for vulnerable children, teens, adults and seniors.

The Healthy Living Kitchen is made possible by the Mead Witter Foundation and the Ascension Foundation, with support from the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
